DESCRIPTION:  A rare and beautiful Chinese daybed or opium bed (also referred to as a lady's couch bed, lohan, or "ta" bed), the black lacquered wood back and side panels shaped as an unfurled scroll with elaborate decorations including figural scenes, animals, flowers and birds, Chinese poetry and pierced gilt carvings. These surround a rectangular support frame topped with a woven mat seat. Below the seat an elaborately carved skirt stretches between thick, boldly carved legs. <p>This well-preserved piece was once used in the scholar's studio where it was convenient for sleeping, reclining and sitting with books and scrolls spread out. Early to mid 1800's. PROVENANCE: From a long held Port St. Lucie, Florida, collection from where it will be shipped.  CONDITION:  Quite good condition with some superficial cracks to the lacquer surface; original finish, solid wood construction, hand painted and carved. Very sturdy with normal age wear. DIMENSIONS: 30"height (78 cm) × 81.5"width (208 cm) × 29"depth (75 cm).
