Charming Chinese Porcelain Figure of Hotei & Children

DESCRIPTION: A delightful porcelain figure of “the Laughing Buddha,” or Hotei, seated with five children clambering on his arms and shoulders. His floral and brick-patterned robe is untied, exposing his expansive belly. Hotei is a Chinese deity representing prosperity and happiness, and is usually depicted laughing and with a huge belly. Tradition identifies him with the eccentric Chinese Zen priest, Pu-tai. This porcelain figure dates from the late 19th to early 20th C. and is in very good condition with no restoration or repairs; a maker’s mark is on the base along with an original firing fissure.
