DESCRIPTION: A pair of Chinese ink and watercolor paintings, each featuring a pair of swimming or jumping carp. These paintings are quite old, dating from the 18th century Qing Dynasty, and are preserved with conservation mats and beautifully framed in gilded faux bamboo. Each has an inscription in Chinese characters and is signed with the artist’s red seal mark.

Carp have long been a Chinese symbol of wealth and abundance, and a pair together speak of marital union. The Chinese word for “carp” and “advantage” are phonetically identical, and because these fish struggle against the current while swimming upstream, carp have also become an emblem of perseverance. DIMENSIONS: In frame 20 ˝” wide (52 cm) x 17” high (43 cm); actual paintings are 9” wide (23 cm) x 6” high (15 cm).   Price: $1,650 Pair   Stock #WD13A
