DESCRIPTION: An exceptional and large Chinese scroll painting featuring the mythical phoenix standing on a large limb of the wu-tung tree surrounded by pairs of birds. The phoenix seems to stand guard while it displays beautifully colored plumage and a luxurious flowing tail. Under the watchful eye of the phoenix are pairs of birds, including cranes, ducks and two pair of swallows.
As in most Chinese art, this painting is full of symbolism. The phoenix, who according to folklore only appears in times of peace, is surrounded by pairs of birds: a pair of Mandarin ducks (a symbol of marital fidelity), two cranes (symbol of longevity), and a pair of swallows (symbol of children, particularly sons). In Confusion philosophy, when each of the primary relationships of life are in proper balance, harmony and peace is achieved. The painting therefore suggests the blessings of a faithful marriage, many sons, and long life.
Professionally framed using acid-free papers and mats, the wood frame is finished in a burnished gold. Because of the reflections of the glass, some photos do not do justice to the beautiful colors and fine detailing of this scroll. Signed by the artist in the upper right corner; Qing Dynasty, good condition with only a few minor spots on background. DIMENSIONS: Scroll painting: 47” long (1.12 m) x 22” wide (56 cm); in frame: 60” long (1.83 m) x 30 ¾” wide (76.2 cm).
