Rare Chinese Cizhou Guardian Figure, Song Period

DESCRIPTION: A molded Cizhou seated figure with dark chocolate, iron glazed robes and a comical, small creature at his feet. Straw colored white slip covers his face, hands and feet, with facial features and robe details vibrantly brush painted with free-hand strokes. On his torso a flower design has been etched through the brown glaze into the white slip below. The figure sits on a fitted wood base; normal firing flaws, scuffs and light abrasions typical of Cizhou Song period pieces are in evidence, but no cracks or repairs noted. Dating to the Song Dynasty, 960 – 1279 AD. DIMENSIONS: 9” tall (23 cm) x 6 ¼” wide at base (16 cm).   Price: $2,295   Stock #PTF163
