Elaborately Carved Chinese Hardwood Bench/Low Table

DESCRIPTION: An extremely handsome hardwood bench or low table with beautiful grain, the legs curving inward and elaborately carved in a cloud scroll pattern. The wood is most likely Jichi Mu, or “chicken wing wood” because of the distinctive grain pattern. This bench was part of a long held Florida collection, and we have left it in its “as found” condition, resisting the temptation of waxing it to bring out the beautiful grain and coloration (many of our Chinese customers prefer furniture untouched and in its natural state).

The bench has the appearance of great age, but we will err on the side of caution and date it 20th C. (although it may be earlier). Even so, such pieces are in great demand now as good carvers are a vanishing breed in China and are quite expensive to employ. This is illustrated by the recent sale of a very similar but slightly larger 20th C. low table sold on the i-Gavel website for $13,200, including buyer’s premium (see their auction of 5/07/08). This very handsome table is perfect for the end of a bed or as seating in a narrow hall. CONDITION: A chip on the side of the top edge and an age crack running down one side of the “floating panel” of the top. DIMENSIONS: 41” wide (1.04 m) x 14 ¼” high (36.2 cm) x 14 ½” deep (36.8 cm).   Price: $2,895   Stock #TBS47
