Pair of Large Japanese Lacquer Nesting Trays, Meiji

DESCRIPTION: A pair of stunning and very large Japanese lacquer trays with elaborate shogun carts under blossoming, gold cherry branches. The design on these matching, nesting trays is executed in takamaki-e (maki-e in which lacquer is built up in high relief) on a mirror-like roiro ground (glossy, black lacquer background produced by repeated polishing). Extremely difficult to photograph because of their mirror-like reflections, the pictures do not do justice in relating the fine details as well as impressive size. The backs are finished in a light nashiji (fine gold flakes that produce a speckled surface, also called "pear-skin").

Originally kimono were neatly folded and presented by placing them in these lacquer trays. Today, they make fine trays for serving, displaying collections, or for displaying ikebana. These date from the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912) and are in quite fine condition with a few minor nicks and touchups, and would make a dramatic statement in any setting. DIMENSIONS: Largest tray: 24” long (61 cm) x 17” wide (43.2 cm) x 3 ½” high (9 cm).   Price: Sold and Shipped to New Jersey, Thanks   Stock #LC53
