DESCRIPTION: An outstanding antique leather document box with original paktong hardware and mounts. Constructed of wood and covered in rich, brown pig leather, this scholar’s box is in absolutely superb condition. The interior is coated with many layers of old lacquer, and all pakong hardware and mountings are in excellent shape. Paktong (“pai-tung”) is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc which originated in China. It had the lustrous sheen and color of silver, but was tarnish proof and considerably harder. Dating from the mid 19th C., we have not come across a similar box is such outstanding condition. There is one small bump to the interior lid, exposing the fabric under-layer and authenticating its age and construction. DIMENSIONS: 12” wide (30.5 cm) x 9” high (23 cm) x 6 1/8” deep (15.5 cm).<div id='rater_target661352'></div>
