Pair Handsome Japanese Hibachi in Original Box

DESCRIPTION: From this good-looking pair of Japanese hibachi, we can easily see how the Japanese esthetic of the late 19th and early 20th centuries influenced our own Arts and Crafts movement. The bodies of each square hibachi are made from kiri wood (Paulownia) and framed in fruitwood (Prunus). Fruitwood slats are joined on the upper half in an open, latticework pattern revealing the removable copper liner. Completing the set is the original cypress storage box (last photo) into which the hibachi neatly stack. Both pair of hibachi are in quite good condition, as is the cypress storage box. A couple of the kiri panels have some minor separations due to shrinkage with age, and both copper liners show usage but no breaks or holes to the liners. An extremely handsome pair dating from the early 1900’s, they would make outstanding planters or magazine containers, particularly in conjunction with an Arts and Crafts setting. DIMENSIONS: Each are 12” square (30.5 cm) x 9 ½” high (24 cm). Storage box is 22 ½” long (56.5 cm) x 13 ½” deep (34.2 cm) x 13 1/2” high (34.2 cm).   Price: $795 Pair   Stock #BPB162
