DESCRIPTION: An outstanding manji netsuke of squared shape, finely carved on both sides with cavorting shi shi (foo, or lion dogs) amid blooming peonies with a lightly textured background. This netsuke has been lacquered in the negoro technique, using a bright iron-red lacquer over black, resulting in a truly beautiful effect that highlights the skilled carving work of great detail and animation. An ivory cotter pin secures the netsuke to the silk cord. Meiji Period, from a private collection and in excellent condition. DIMENSIONS: 1 5/8” square (4.2 cm).   Price: $895   Stock #SN60
