DESCRIPTION: A large, museum quality Mongolian lidded wine pot with jade medallions and semi-precious inlays of coral, turquoise and lapis lazuli. The pot’s ovoid silver repousse body is formed in the shape of a fantastic archaistic lion/dog with curly mane and tail, a fierce toothy grin, and a spout arching from the top of its head. Supporting the pot are the lion’s four legs, the paws resting on silver balls. Adorning each side of the lion are large, finely carved white jade plaques, one carved with a pair of large peaches, the other with two fish, a bat and peaches surrounding the Chinese character “shuangxi” which means "double happiness."
On the neck and lid of the vessel are numerous shaped turquoise, coral and lapis lazuli inlays. The lid is topped with a well carved white jade chilong set inside a raised repousse medallion. A white jade belt hook in the form of two dragons adorns the handle’s top. An outstanding example of artistic form and design, this commanding and extremely rare 18th to early 19th C. pot is a masterpiece of Mongolian art. CONDITION: Repairs to the jade belt buckle and a fissure to one jade medallion; very sturdy and in very good condition for age and usage. DIMENSIONS: Overall, 13 ¼” high (33.6 cm) x 9 ½” wide (24 cm). Large jade medallions measure approximately 5 ¼” wide (13.3 cm) x 5” high (12.8 cm). |
