Chinese Brass Ink Stone Box With Inscription

DESCRIPTION: A unique scholar’s calligraphy box of solid brass that includes an ink stone within the inner lid. The outer lid has a ten-character Chinese inscription at the top, and shows an idyllic scene with mountains, pavilions, boats, and trees in finely hand-incised lines. Inside this lid is a thin, square ink stone surface held in place by an inner rim. A nice portable way to carry necessary writing accoutrements, the lower portion of the box was used to hold ink cakes and is lined with copper. This box has a nice hefty weight to it with its original patina, and has obviously been used for its intended purpose, with the interior covered in black ink. Estimated to date from the first quarter of the 20th century, it would be make a handsome addition to any scholar’s art collection. DIMENSIONS: Approximately 3 ¾” square (9.5 cm) x 1 ¼” high (3.25 cm).
