DESCRIPTION: A larger sized celadon colored jade (nephrite) plaque in the form of a butterfly (or moth) with stand. At the butterfly’s head is a pierced flower with leaves. In Chinese iconography, when a butterfly and plum blossoms appear together, it symbolizes long life and immaculate beauty. This is perhaps the motif found in this carving. From the collection of a retired Washington D.C. judge, Qing Dynasty, pre 1900’s. The jade is in excellent condition; the stand has a repair to one arm. DIMENSIONS: Jade is 5 5/8” wide x 3 5/8” high. On stand, 6 ¼” high.
