DESCRIPTION: Originating from the Fongxian area of Shangxi Province is this magnificent and rare Tang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.) pottery horse. This dynamic unglazed horse has its powerful neck gracefully turned with head lowered, ears pricked and teeth bared. Its head shows fine detailing, and the thick, muscular torso of this proud beast is supported by legs standing four-square on a plinth. The whole results in a very dynamic sculptural form. Real horse hair would have been inserted into the open ridge running the length of the neck and the hole in the rump to form the mane and tail -- long ago degraded during the burial process. Fongxian pottery horses are noted for their powerful builds and muscular bodies, much like today’s draft horses, and are of a quality rarely achieved at other centers in China during the Tang period. This horse makes a superb companion with our other Tang Fongxian horse, stock #PTA32, shown together in the last photo and most likely originating from the same tomb. In very good condition with no visible repairs, although possible repairs cannot be ruled out as is common with ancient tomb figures. Authenticity guaranteed. DIMENSIONS: 14 ½” high x 15 ½” long.<div id='rater_target399564'></div>
