Powerful Tang Dynasty Pottery Horse

DESCRIPTION: Originating from the Fongxian area of Shangxi Province is this magnificent and rare Tang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.) pottery horse. Fongxian pottery horses are noted for their powerful builds and muscular bodies, much like today’s draft horses, and are of a quality rarely achieved at other centers in China during the Tang period. This dynamic unglazed prancer has its powerful neck gracefully turned with head lowered, ears pricked and teeth bared. Its head shows fine detailing, and its right front leg is raised as if pawing the ground. The thick, muscular torso of this proud beast is supported by three legs on a plinth, and the whole results in a dynamically sculptural form. Real horse hair would have been inserted into the open ridge running the length of the neck and the hole in the rump to form the mane and tail -- long ago degraded during the burial process. In very good condition with no visible repairs, although possible repairs cannot be ruled out as is common with ancient tomb figures. Authenticity guaranteed. DIMENSIONS: 14 ¼” high x 14 ¾” long.   Price: $8,900   Stock #PTA32
