| DESCRIPTION: A magnificent pottery figure of a long-legged camel with removable saddle and foreign rider, originating from Shanxi Province and T.L. tested to the early Tang Dynasty, c. 625 A.D. Exceptionally proportioned, this proud animal is hand sculpted (rather than mould poured like many Tang figures) and stands foursquare with head raised, long tail, and combed mane. A foreign rider which was modeled separately is seated between the humps on a thick saddlebag with suspended bottles, hair pulled back in a knot.
The dating of this camel and saddle is consistent with the results of a thermoluminescence test, sample no. 1031A1.1, Daybreak Archaeometric Laboratory, on 3/22/04. We have seen many beautiful Tang camels, but the artistry of this impressive piece places it near the top as an exceptional work of art. Excellent condition with possible areas of expert restoration (not detected), to be expected in burial pieces of this age. DIMENSIONS: 25.5” high (with rider) x 20.25” wide.
