DESCRIPTION: A quite spectacular Acoma pot of great size and shape with a wonderfully complex design by Acoma artist, Adrian Vallo. A double rainbow of light and dark sienna bands divides this beautiful greenware olla into four quadrants, with two lively dark-sienna parrots below the arched rainbows, and two lighter sienna parrots above horizontal rainbow bands. Additional geometric designs in black on white are executed with clean, crisp lines. Very good condition, minor surface scratches, and one tiny interior rim chip. Signed on the bottom, "A. Vallo, Acoma, 1999." DIMENSIONS: A large 13.5" high x 14" diameter.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Adrian Vallo was born into the Acoma Pueblo in 1964 and began his interest in pottery making when he was 20 years old. His grandmother, the late Santana Cerno, taught Adrian to coil, shape, paint, and fire pottery. An artist of superior technical proficiency, he often paints traditional designs and motifs, such as Acoma parrots or deer patterns. He gathers natural pigments from the Acoma Pueblo to paint his pottery and cleans, mixes, hand coils, shapes, paints, and fires his pottery the traditional way, outdoors. He has won awards at both the New Mexico State Fair and the Arizona Casa Grande, and is featured in "Southern Pueblo Pottery 2,000 Artist Biographies."
