DESCRIPTION:  A delightful and well carved Japanese ivory okimono of a mischievous  oni in a confrontation with two large monkeys.  Crouching at the oni's back is a kappa, another mischievous mythical animal from Japanese folklore.  Here he assists the oni from a safe distance.  A smaller monkey crouches between the opposing figures.  Skillfully carved, including the underside.  Meiji Period (1868 - 1912); very good condition.
