DESCRIPTION: Inlaid Persian metalwork has long been distinguished for its fine craftsmanship and elaborate designs. Here we have an early 19th C. iron pen box, exquisitely inlaid with gold on all surfaces. On the top is featured three cartouches, the two outer ones with birds in a setting of intricate floral decorations, and the center with seated and standing figures on either side of a table. DESCRIPTION: Because Koreans so highly valued nature and natural materials, their chests were constructed so that the wood itself was the most beautiful aspect of the piece. This is certainly true with this lovely chest on chest (yi chung nong), most likely originating from Kyonggi Province. Tibetan Gau (small personal shrine), the front having a profuse silver repousse’ design in a floral motif, surrounding an opening to the interior where a small Buddha or devotional object would be kept. Not a made-for-tourist piece, but a genuine Tibetan devotional object, evidenced by the covering of soot from the open fires of Tibetan huts.
