Pair of Japanese Guardian Lion-Dogs (Koma-Inu), Edo FIG84DESCRIPTION: A pair of wonderful wood koma-inu dogs (also called Shishi or Fu dogs) covered overall in a dark brown lacquer with traces of gilt. Such dogs were always found in pairs, male and female, with huge stone examples placed at the entrances of Buddhist temples to protect against evil spirits. Fine Japanese Ikebana Basket, Meiji, Signed BSK49DESCRIPTION: A fine smoked reed basket in a graceful ovoid form, woven in an open pattern with horizontal reed bands. The basket is complemented by a bent bamboo handle with a butterfly knot centered at the top, and is firmly secured to the basket on each side with three-prong woven supports. Signed by the artist on the base, this basket was in a private Georgia collection since 1975; collector’s catalogue stickers can still be seen on the base.
