DESCRIPTION: A spectacular Japanese box, beautifully lacquered with gold scrolling vines, delicate leaves and a repeating circular mon (family crest) against a black lacquer ground. This striking box is secured with hand etched brass fittings on the corners and matching rectangular handles on each end. On top of the slightly domed lid is a circular depiction of millet grain ready for harvest. The interior and bottom are finished with a glossy, mirror-like, black roiro ground in perfect condition... The background of this large box is lacquered in a mirror-like, black ro-iro ground, with a vivid gold lacquer design on the lid of bamboo superimposed over a ginko leaf, all within a gold circle. DESCRIPTION: An outstanding manji netsuke of squared shape, finely carved on both sides with cavorting shi shi (foo, or lion dogs) amid blooming peonies with a lightly textured background. This netsuke has been lacquered in the negoro technique, using a bright iron-red lacquer over black, resulting in a truly beautiful effect that highlights the skilled carving work of great detail and animation. DESCRIPTION: A complete and beautifully lacquered suzuri-bako (writing box) from the Meiji Period, early 1900’s. The lid of the rectangular box is decorated with a takamakie floral design in gold, silver and shu (a hue of red-orange) lacquer on a black ro-iro ground.
