DESCRIPTION: A smoked reed and split bamboo Japanese ikebana (flower) basket in ovoid form with the neck and base in a horizontal weave and the center in an open “X” form pattern. The high handle is crafted of three split bamboo pieces displaying several specialty knots. With a wonderful old patina and no losses detected, this is a fine basket that dates from the 19th C., Meiji Period. DIMENSIONS: 17 ¼” high (43.8 cm) including handle.

DESCRIPTION: A fine smoked bamboo ikebana basket woven in a tall ovoid form with entwined bamboo handle. The basket is crafted with a vertical diagonal weave from both wide and narrow splints in contrasting colors. This sturdy and very handsome basket has a beautiful aged patina with no losses detected; early 20th century. DIMENSIONS: 18 ½” high x 8 ¾” diameter.

DESCRIPTION: An early 20th century Japanese ikebana basket with an open-weave ovoid body of a reddish-black split bamboo. A lighter colored smoked bamboo runs through the weave in a random pattern around the body, and a wrapped bamboo handle is attached. Wonderful old patina with no losses detected. A 4” high x 4” diameter copper liner is included. DIMENSIONS: 14 ¾” high x 9 ½” diameter.

Fine Japanese Ikebana Flower Basket, Meiji BSK55
DESCRIPTION: A very fine Japanese ikebana basket with horizontal weave in classic ovid form. Smoked, split bamboo has been used on the body of the basket, with the lower waist area interlaced with larger bamboo for a lovely contrast in color and weave pattern. The rim and looping handle are wrapped in woven rattan. Excellent condition with no breaks, C. 1900. Unsigned; former collector’s sticker on base. MEASUREMENTS: 8.75” in diameter, 14” high including handle.
