The basket is complemented by a bent bamboo handle with a butterfly knot centered at the top, and is firmly secured to the basket on each side with three-prong woven supports. Signed by the artist on the base, this basket was in a private Georgia collection since 1975; collector’s catalogue stickers can still be seen on the base. Tall Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket, Meiji BSK64A tall and quite dramatic Japanese ikebana basket crafted of a reddish bamboo, the inner layer woven in a tight herringbone pattern and the outer layer composed of wide vertical bamboo strips added for vertical strength. These wide strips have been split at the tops and woven back down into the basket in projecting V-shaped patterns. Three twisting yellow bamboo twigs form the handle.
