Fine Shibuichi Kozuka with Egret, Edo Period, 18th C. BB91DESCRIPTION: A very fine Japanese grey shibuichi (silver and copper alloy) kozuka, c. 1740 – 1780, with a well patinated and very fine nanako background (literally “fish roe”) of tiny dome-shaped dots. The design features an egret flying over snow-laden bamboo, crafted in high relief inlays of silver, shakudo and gold. Probably Hahano or Waki-Goto School, unsigned, very superior work and in very good condition. DIMENSIONS: 3 ¾” long (9.5 cm).

Japanese Ivory Okimono of Processional With Oni SN54DESCRIPTION: What a delightful piece! Here we find a processional “in the round,” as a group of characters from Japanese lore parade around a leafy tree. Among them is Diakoku with his hammer, Benkei carrying the Miidera Bell, and the blind man who has fallen and bumped his head! And of course, two oni do their best to disrupt the group and cause mischief by grabbing and pushing. Each character is carved in deep relief with wonderful expression and detail. Appealing Japanese Ivory Netsuke of Fukurokuju SN53DESCRIPTION: A well carved and quite appealing ivory netsuke of Fukurokuju holding a fan in one hand and his staff in the other. Immediately recognizable by his tall, domed forehead, Fukurokuju is a Japanese deity of happiness, prosperity, longevity, and wisdom. Ivory Netsuke of Two Monkeys, Signed SN52DESCRIPTION: A charming and well carved ivory netsuke depicting two monkeys climbing on a rock that has a pierced center. Wonderful detail is found in the monkeys’ fur and the rock’s texture. Most likely dating from the first half of the 20th C., it is in excellent condition and signed on the base. Stained Japanese Ivory Netsuke, Screaming Kirin, Meiji SN45DESCRIPTION: A well carved, stained ivory netsuke depicting a screaming kirin with inlaid eyes. The kirin (in China, called the Kylin) is a mythical hoofed beast of good omen and pure heart. Said to appear in conjunction with the arrival of a great sage, it is sometimes referred to as a Japanese unicorn, and is often depicted with what looks like flames all over its body. Large Japanese Ivory Manju Netsuke with Peony, Meiji SN43DESCRIPTION: A very fine antique ivory manju netsuke, exquisitely carved in the form of a peony over rockworks in raised relief. The delicate petals are so realistically carved you can almost see the flower open and unfold. Around the perimeter is a raised edge suggesting two halves that are joined, but actually the netsuke is solid ivory with two himotoshi on the reverse.
