Large Edo Japanese Boy’s Day Doll, Samurai FIG81DESCRIPTION: Impressive Edo Period (c. 1800- 1886) Japanese samurai doll, or musha ningyo, made for display on Boy’s Day which is celebrated annually in Japan on May 5. This seated samurai has wonderful detailing in the cotton and silk brocade costume, and is rendered in full armor with yoroi and kabuto. Fine Negoro Lacquer Manju Netsuke with Shi Shi, Meiji SN60DESCRIPTION: An outstanding manji netsuke of squared shape, finely carved on both sides with cavorting shi shi (foo, or lion dogs) amid blooming peonies with a lightly textured background. This netsuke has been lacquered in the negoro technique, using a bright iron-red lacquer over black, resulting in a truly beautiful effect that highlights the skilled carving work of great detail and animation. SN58DESCRIPTION: A beautifully carved and quite realistic Japanese boxwood netsuke, crafted in the form of a walnut shell with blooming chrysanthemums on the top and bottom. Fine Shakudo Kozuka, Man Gathering Rushes, 17th C. BB95DESCRIPTION: A fine Japanese shakudo (copper alloy) kozuka, c. 1600 – 1650, with a well patinated and fine nanako background (literally “fish roe”) of tiny dome-shaped dots. Excellent hand worked detail in the high relief gold overlay design, featuring a man in a cap gathering spring shoots of rushes he has cut with a sickle.
