DESCRIPTION: This large, gorgeous Japanese tray is crafted from a beautifully undulating piece of burl with curled edges that turn and overlap into the interior. The wood is a rich brown and twists in the most sumptuous patterns; the base is made from one flat slab of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. Striking and unique from any angle, it is a testament to the eye of the craftsman who saw its beauty and fashioned it for use. Excellent condition and dating from the Meiji period (1868 – 1912). DESCRIPTION: A lidded, hand painted Japanese rice serving bowl, the lid decorated with two confronting roosters among floral designs. Cloud designs line the rims, and the navy blue base tapers dramatically to a raised foot. An impressed maker’s mark appears on the base as well as the original collector’s inventory numbers. Excellent original condition with no chips, and dating from the Showa Period (1926 – 1945). DIMENSIONS: 7 ¼” diameter (8.4 cm) x 4 ½” high (11.5 cm).

DESCRIPTION: An attractive carved stag horn handle, most likely for a lady’s fine umbrella, with a continuous scene of a small boy next to a woman in elaborate robes with a fan, both standing under a tall pine tree with reticulated branches. The carving is attached with a brass ring to a bamboo handle which has an embedded brass screw receptor for attaching to the umbrella. DIMENSIONS: Stag horn carving is 7 1/2” long (19 cm). Entire length is 15 ¼” (38.6 cm).

DESCRIPTION: A spectacular Japanese box, beautifully lacquered with gold scrolling vines, delicate leaves and a repeating circular mon (family crest) against a black lacquer ground. This striking box is secured with hand etched brass fittings on the corners and matching rectangular handles on each end. DESCRIPTION: A pair of wonderful wood koma-inu dogs (also called Shishi or Fu dogs) covered overall in a dark brown lacquer with traces of gilt. Such dogs were always found in pairs, male and female, with huge stone examples placed at the entrances of Buddhist temples to protect against evil spirits. These smaller wood versions were used on either side of sacred shrines as part of the internal decoration. The name “Koma-inu” means dog of Koryo, after the medieval Korean dynasty from which they...
