Japanese Scroll Painting by Kano Eigaku, Edo Period WD25DESCRIPTION: A framed Japanese scroll painting of an ox in black ink on beige rice paper. A poem is inscribed in loose strokes at the top portion of the painting and is signed at the bottom by the artist, Kano Eigaku (1790 – 1867). Antique Japanese Emperor and Empress Hina Dolls, Meiji FIG61DESCRIPTION: A fine pair of large Japanese Emperor and Empress dolls, or kokin-bina, presented in formal court dress. The empress’ attire is quite elaborate, using fine brocade silks with hand embroidered flowers. In her hands she holds a painted fan and is crowned with an elaborate headdress representing a bird with long hanging beads attached. Japanese Ivory Netsuke Okimono of Oni with Book, Meiji SN55DESCRIPTION: An appealing Japanese ivory netsuke of a seated oni with one leg extended and holding an open book inscribed with tiny readable characters. Nicely carved with horns, fur and hairy britches, this comical little demon dates from the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912), and can sit like an okimono for display. Small Japanese Brass Cosmetics Box, Early 20th C. LVBB11DESCRIPTION: A Japanese half-round brass box or locket, the hinged lid with raised decoration of a lotus blossom. Inside the lid is a small round mirror which leads us to believe this was used as a cosmetics box. Japanese Ivory Okimono of Shoki and Oni, Edo IVR45DESCRIPTION: A carved and signed ivory okimono of the demon queller, Shoki, with two small oni crouched at his feet. The bearded Shoki stands clutching his spear in full armor with elaborate flowing robes and sword suspended from his belt. At his feet are two oni, kneeling in submission. Fine Japanese Ivory Okimono of Oni and Warrior, Signed IVR46DESCRIPTION: A finely detailed and quite superb Japanese ivory okimono, artist signed and dating from the Meiji Period, 19th C. Two oni, both wearing hirsute britches, assist a young warrior by forming the support for him to climb upon in order to get a better view. The larger crouching oni with inlaid eyes forms the base, one hand holding his large straw hat in place.
