DESCRIPTION: An appealing Chinese toggle (guajian), carved from Huanghuali wood (a hardwood similar to Rosewood) in the form of a Buddhist lion seated on a plinth with one paw placed on top of a ball. With raised tail, textured fur on his back, and brass studs decorating the eyes and each limb, this foo dog would have been used as a counterweight for a tobacco pouch or other object suspended from a belt. DESCRIPTION: A large, handsome Chinese burl wood mushroom toggle (guajian), a symbol of fertility, shaped as a button and carved to resemble a large mushroom cap with ten inverted smaller mushrooms in a cluster. The smaller mushrooms encircle the larger mushroom cap with graceful stems emanating from the center on the reverse side, one stem missing. The unusually thick, domed and pierced lid is expertly carved with a three dimensional profusion of flowers surrounding a center cartouche featuring a Chinese garden scene. On close inspection, you marvel at the delicately carved ivory leaves and tiny flower petals, all placed above a carved diaper-patterned ground.
